I thought I’d post my results from the assignments this month. I had a good idea on most of the topics how the results would look, but the one that did surprise me was the difference between in-camera white balance and custom white balance. The ‘lighting bolt’ was significantly warmer than the custom setting.

Links to the comparisons are below, I had trouble putting images into the post directly:

About Matthew Strauss

Professional photographer based in Phoenix, AZ., and State Director of the International Fire Photographer's Association, I love shooting people, places, and things. I began my career in photojournalism, shooting for clients, publications, and NGOs in the Middle-East and North Africa before transitioning to more editorial and commercial work. But I still get my PJ fix through fire photography, I love the excitement and challenge.

I like both the helicopter shots as they convey different things. I have to do the sharpness assignment still, been super busy but I will have two shoots for feedback by end of the day.

    Matthew,
    1. On the handheld vs. tripod assignment: post these same images but cropped in tighter to eye, nose, ear and part of the bow tie. This will reveal the sharpness differentiation in greater detail.
    2. Overall Assignment Feedback: Very nice job…great execution.
    3. Love the helicopter/flare shots too. With regards to the shot with the in camera flare. This kind of heavy backlighting is a perfect opportunity to do a multi frame exposure bracket to give you some post production control of subject detail. I can’t help but wonder if more detail in the chopper would elevate the shot. Something to always think about in cases like this. The shadow throw from the sun is particularly beautiful and almost become a subject focal point in itself

Sweet! I should post my stuff… I just recently got a Flickr account for all of this, but found that it won’t work for posting entire shoots because the free account only displays the most recent 200 photos. My shoots are usually double that… So I’m not sure what I’m going to be doing yet.
