I have finally edited the shoot I did while assisting Terri Aldridge (May 23 post).  It was quite fun…Thanks Terri!!. I worked with the ambient light as Terri shot. This shoot was totally grunge to me……The girls were great (normal!) but wanted to convey the feeling of rough roller derby girls! Photo Critique  Requested Please!

NOTE FROM CHRIS:  There is a depth of information to be had when comparing Terri’s production and Susan’s production.  Aesthetics, proactive vs. reactive photography, shooting approach and possible usages that are ideal for each.  Far from a good or bad thing…it is a perfect reflection of creative possibilities, circumstances and directions.   While there are a host of topics we could discuss about this, what strikes me most is the reality that Terri’s shoot required preproduction, pressure to produce a certain result, defined direction and substantial coordination and control…Susan had little, if any  control while overshooting to capture the “fallout” from Terri’s shoot with no pressure.   The results are as dramatically different as the conditions each photographer was working within.

I would be very interested in hearing your critiques and comments on these two shoots considering this dynamic or other topics related to these shoots.

About Susan Luther

I have been a hairstylist for the last 25 years. I am now wanting to move to doing photography full time. I majored in Photography and have been doing it off and on for quite sometime now. I hope to make this a reality with the help of this internship!

Second to last image is the strongest in my opinion, nice use of movement and color.

I absolutely love what you did with these, very creatively done! I’m such a sucker for the black and white ones especially. I love that you went into this kind of shoot and made art and not just plain old commercial photographs, where I feel like most people would have went for the norm. Great job!!

I’m a fan of the 4th photo, as well, though I wish she were either centered in the photo or facing the other way or placed on the right side rather than the left. Sort of like in the 5th photo where the negative space is in front of them, giving the feeling that they have somewhere to go…Then again, that might just make it look less grunge, less organic. Maybe it would have come across as more ‘packaged’ and less spontaneous if it were framed differently… (This is my trouble with critique. I always see things multiple ways…)

Anyway, I am envious of you and Terri! Roller Derby sounds like a fun photo shoot! Overall, I think you captured the mood and basically the gist of roller derby quite well. Nicely done :)

I like the gritty black and white photos and think that they serve really well for a roller derby team. I especially like the selective pink color of the skates in the first photo. The contrast between the high contrast with the soft pink is very nice. But my favorite is the fourth photo, I like the composition of the skater to the side.

Susan I especially love the second one! B&W is my first true love. This really makes me wish that I had the space to set up my darkroom- I miss it so much. There is something very organic about these photos :) Thanks for coming to help and thanks for posting them!
