Assignment #6 – Intro to Light Modifiers
By Vania Elise
.
Assignment 6 was really foreign to me because I have never worked with any kind of lighting modifiers or in a professional photography studio before, so it was great experience for me! Luckily, I had an amazing team of people around that knew what they were doing… (Ahem, thank you to Susan and Matthew) The first shot is done with the lighting diagram (see below) instructions, it made for a great beauty shot to add to my portfolio. The rest were done by playing with the light modifiers to get different effects. I definitely need more practice with this to learn what it is I’m actually doing tech wise, otherwise I am just going by visual circumstances.
Note from CB: Very remarkable photography here for a intern who had never worked in a photography studio before or worked with artificial lighting before. Granted having Matthew and Susan who have considerably more experience there made a signficant difference in the quality of her results, however her use of in camera cropping, a variety of interesting camera angles and post production is noteworthy. At the same time, here is another set of images that raise the never ending question of “where is the line?” when it comes to photoshop/hdr/color treatments. Personally, I think she hits some home runs here more than she strikes out….What do you think?
Vania,
I am continually impressed with the work I see you producing. For whatever it is worth, your taking to the use of strobes and modifiers like a duck to water. If I didn’t like your photo shopping on many of the images so much I would rant about it being too heavy. Frankly, I should probably rant anyway just on principle! I think your dance on the razor’s edge although, I must admit you have produced some winners. The examples here of photoshopping that is excessive and distracting is balanced by the home runs which obviously justify the overall direction. As I have noted on other occasions, this is a very subjective question and I hope we get other comments with feedback from others about their opinions on this question. For me, it always comes down to the question of degree of distraction…when does the post production work draw so much attention to itself that it distracts instead of enhances the photography itself. I would rather see shooters cross that line if that is where their hearts lead them particularly if even a single portfolio quality image emerges from the process. I have to keep reminding myself that you are on the front end of a learning curve with your lighting and camera handling. I want to revisit your current portfolio with you soon. I think it is time we start pushing it to the next level. Please call me to schedule a meeting to do this. I will be back in Phoenix next week.

Love your shots as well! The one near the window gives me the emotion feeling….love what it does to the viewer. You are so commercial….that is definitely your calling!! Great to work with you and THANKS again for supplying the model:)

Shots look great Vania! My favorite from that set I think is the second row down, right one. Great composition and post on it.

Thanks Matt, I definitely think that one is my favorite out of all the shots.
